With the purpose of strengthening democracy and good governance in Sri Lanka by increasing women’s political participation, AWAW groomed 75 women (‘SMART 75’) coming from all areas, ethnicities, religions and most importantly political parties
The specific objectives of this project were
I. To increase educated young women’s representation in politics at
parliamentary and provincial level.
II. To create a strong network of 75 young educated women leaders across
ethnic, religious and demographical divide.
III. To enable men and women politicians to advocate through understanding and awareness for the increase of women in governance structures of Sri Lanka.
The project was implemented and completed very successfully. AWAW was able to groom 75 women and educate them on various topics.
Thirty women have taken initiatives to collect information on their respective constituencies and compile books with the information. 10 women have already used the RTI act to seek information and many more will be doing so in the future. Almost all of them have enhanced leadership qualities and now are connected via social media. They do have a WhatsApp group, Face book group and they also connect via Messenger. They will be soon carrying out campaigns on ending violence against women by creating women friendly spaces and public transport. One women has taken Governance issues at the council and was even challenged, some have improved or created new sanitary facilities in the councils which were not available or was in very bad condition. They were also upgrading the wellbeing facilities such as Gyms in their own areas
The manuals which were updated and translated were shared with other SDGAP grantees as well they were given the necessary information and knowhow of training
AWAW also invited all of them for the 18th Anniversary Celebrations of UNSCR 1325 event held on the 31st of October 2018
